Auf unsere Road Trip nach Norden hatten wir Halt gemacht in Monterey Bay, für mich ist dieser Ort insofern interessant weil sie hier eine große Aquarium Anlage haben. Das Wetter war auch an diesem Tag miserabel, also optimal um einen halben Tag hier in der Anlage zu verbringen.

Die Anlage ist eine umgebaute alte Sardinen Fabrik, gar nicht mal so klein. Mitbegründer der Anlage stammt aus dem Hause Hewlett-Packard. Bis auf ein paar wenige tropische Warmwasseraquarien hat diese Einrichtung überwiegend Aquarien mit Kaltwasser, viele Tiere stammen eher aus dem lokalen Gebiet vor Kalifornien. Der Eintrittspreis war nicht günstig, aber man bekommt hier einiges zu sehen. Zusätzlich kann man Sonderführungen wie z.B. Hinter der Kulisse Tour buchen. Dies tat ich auch und es war wirklich interessant zu sehen. Diese Anlage bezieht sein Frischwasser aus dem pazifischen Ozean direkt vor der Haustür, ähnlich wie die Anlage auf der Insel Okinawa in Japan.

Man findet hier neben Fischen auch einen See-Otter Becken sowie Südafrikanische Pinguine, ein paar einheimische Vogelarten und einige Quallen-Becken. Außerhalb der Anlage sieht man direkt den pazifischen Ozean und kann freilebende Seelöwen, Seerobben und See-Otter sehen. Die Einrichtung und Becken sind alle in einem sehr guten Zustand, die Präsentationen und Informationsgehalt werden professionell dargestellt und haben meiner Meinung nach einen hohen Qualitätsstand. Es wird hier viel Aufklärungsarbeit bezüglich die Bedrohung des Meeres betrieben, sie haben extra einen „Seafood-Restaurant“ nachgebaut wo man virtuell erlernen kann welche Meeresfische und Meeresfrüchte man nicht verzehren sollte um die Art zu schützen. Es sind viele Spielecken für Kinder eingerichtet wo sie spielerisch erlenen kann wie man unsere Meere schützen kann…Lerneffekt hängt jedoch stark von den Eltern ab…

Die Anlage hat mir sehr gut gefallen, es war auf jeden Fall sehenswert.

On our road trip to the North we stopped in Monterey Bay. This place is interesting to me because they have a large aquarium here. The weather was also miserable that day, so it was ideal for spending half a day here in the complex.
The facility is a converted old sardine factory, not that small. The co-founder of the system comes from Hewlett-Packard. With the exception of a few tropical warm water aquariums, this facility predominantly has cold water aquariums; many animals come from the local area off California.
The entrance fee wasn't cheap, but you get to see a lot here. You can also book special tours such as the behind the scenes tour. I did this too and it was really interesting to see. This facility draws its fresh water from the Pacific Ocean right on its doorstep, similar to the facility on the island of Okinawa in Japan.
In addition to fish, you can also find a sea otter tank as well as South African penguins, a few native bird species and some jellyfish tanks. Outside the complex you can directly see the Pacific Ocean and see wild sea lions, seals and sea otters.
The furnishings and pools are all in very good condition, the presentations and information content are presented professionally and, in my opinion, are of a high level of quality.
A lot of educational work is being done here regarding the threat to the sea; they have specially recreated a “seafood restaurant” where you can learn virtually which sea fish and seafood you should not eat in order to protect the species.
There are many play areas for children where they can learn in a playful way how to protect our seas...however, the learning effect depends heavily on the parents...
I really liked the facility, it was definitely worth seeing.

Ab und an hatte ich beim Zappen Daheim mal die Sendung “Die Aquarium Profis” angeschaut und war stets neugierig ob sie denn auch wirklich so schrill sind. Da wir sowieso in Vegas waren und mir auffiel dass der Laden hier seinen Sitz hat, hatte ich mal nach der Adresse gegoogelt und siehe da, den Laden gibt es wirklich und wir fuhren da mal vorbei. Der Laden sah von außen schon mal so wie im Fernsehen, allerdings war der Eingang seitlich vom Gebäude und nicht von vorne. Im Eingangsbereich hatten sie die Wände voller Fan-Post zugekleistert und man sah einen Meerwasser- Aquarium in einem alten durchgeschnittenen Oldtimer, schon irgendwie verrückt die Idee aber es sah cool aus. Zudem laufen noch auf einem Fernseher Ausschnitte von ihre Sendung. Als wir reinkamen waren ein paar Leute dabei eine weitere Folge der Sendung zu drehen, sie liefen mit Kamera-Equipments in die Werkstatt. In der Verkaufshalle begrüßte mich ein Angestellter und sagte ich könne mich hier frei in dem markierten Bereich bewegen. Der Verkaufsbereich ist bestück mit Fan-Artikeln, von T-Shirts über Tassen usw. kann man hier sehr viel Kitsch kaufen, aber es gibt auch tatsächlich Aquarium Zubehör, allerdings war die Auswahl nicht so viel und viele Eigenmarken. Es gibt auch ein großes gewölbtes Aquarium mit Meerwasserfische, wie man im Fernsehen auch sieht sind hier nur Plastikkorallen, nicht wirklich mein Fall. Zudem konnte ich auch sehen dass Ablagerungen von Algen und/oder Cyano-Bakterien im Sand und auf den Plastikkorallen vorhanden sind…nicht gerade optimal das Becken. Es gab auch zwei große Becken mit echten Korallen, allerdings waren kaum Fische drin, vermutlich kann man die Korallen einzeln erwerben. Man hatte auch einen Einblick in die Werkstatt, ich konnte sehen wie die Mitarbeiter gerade am Aquarium bauen waren, war echt interessant. In dem Laden traf ich den Vater, auch „The General“ genannt und „Redneck“ von der Werkstatt. Es war auf jeden Fall mal interessant einen kurzen Einblick in dem Laden zu haben. Ich bleibe allerdings bei Glasaquarium und echte Korallen ;-)

Every now and then I watched the show “Tanked” while zapping at home and I was always curious as to whether they were really that flashy.
Since we were in Vegas anyway and I noticed that the store is based here, I googled the address and lo and behold, the store really exists and we drove past it.
The outside of the store looked like it did on TV, but the entrance was on the side of the building and not from the front.
In the entrance area they had covered the walls with fan mails and you could see a seawater aquarium in an old cut-up vintage car, the idea was kind of crazy but it looked cool. There is also a screen where excerpts from their show are also shown. When we came in there were a few people filming another episode of the show, they ran into the workshop with camera equipment.
An employee greeted me in the sales hall and said I could move freely in the marked area.
The sales area is stocked with fan items, from T-shirts to mugs etc. you can buy a lot of kitsch here, but there are actually aquarium accessories, although the selection wasn't that much and there were a lot of their own brands.
There is also a large domed aquarium with seawater fish, as you can see on TV there are only plastic corals here, not really my thing.
I could also see that there were deposits of algae and/or cyano bacteria in the sand and on the plastic corals...not exactly ideal for the tank.
There were also two large tanks with real corals, but there were hardly any fish in them, you can probably buy the corals individually.
You also had a look into the workshop, I could see how the employees were building the aquarium, which was really interesting. In the shop I met the father, also called “The General” and “Redneck” from the workshop.
It was definitely interesting to have a brief insight into the store. However, I'll stick with glass aquariums and real corals ;-)
